It’s amazing how little time one gets to be truly alone during the day. There is too much society wherever we go. So, the way to survive in a modern world is to retreat from the society, to detoxify ourselves from everything and everybody, from all the engagement and day to day grid.
We need to rest our minds. Being alone for a day or even for a few hours, hidden from the eyes of passers-by, is always wonderfully reinforcing. But the difficult part comes from our unfamiliarity with solitude, with silence, with vast empty spaces.
The Wild Atlantic Way provides a solitary retreat in a safe and beautiful environment. And the hike at Erris Head in County Mayo was one of the happiest moments during our journey.
All around there was no one. Just a great peacefulness.
The solitariness. The simplicity of the landscape. The surrounding horizon stretching out infinitely, deserted and indifferent. The silence. The sun illuminating the scene with a soft friendly light. A few sheep here and there.
Marvelous!
