The 8:30AM-ferry took us from Oulusale to the island of Hailuoto, the largest one on the northern Gulf of Bothnia. We closed on the dock after half an hour sail, then drove through the countryside dotted with farm buildings before reaching the village of Marjaniemi at the westernmost point of the island.
It’s hard to believe, that the first parts of Hailuoto emerged from the sea only less than 2000 years ago. The island is constantly expanding and eventually it will join with the continent. In the winter there is even an official ice road, which connects the island with the mainland.
At this time of the year Marjaniemi, dominated by a lighthouse, was a peaceful place. In the morning sunshine the colors were just amazing.
